fullness of his grace

(From John 1) v16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. [NIV 1984 ed.]

These sentences leapt from the page for me during last night’s midnight service. “Fullness of his grace” in particular. Other translations use “grace upon grace”. Both are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful phrases. (They remind me of lyrics that I can hear in my head, but I can’t quite remember which song(s) they’re from.)

Praise God for sending us Jesus. Thank you for sending us Grace and Truth. Thank you for sending us the Word to reveal and rescue. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

This is one of the songs. “You are my strength” by Reuben Morgan (Hillsong Music). Somewhere along the line I did a big 180, and now find that I don’t mind a bit of Hillsong these days. They do the “anthemic” style of worship very well, and their live recordings in particular help me worship God much better than I ever could on my own. Now, what is the “grace upon grace” song???

    You are my strength
    Strength like no other
    Strength like no other
    Reaches to me

    You are my hope
    Hope like no other
    Hope like no other
    Reaches to me

In the fullness of Your grace
In the power of Your Name
    You lift me up
    You lift me up

    Unfailing love
    Stronger than mountains
    Deeper than oceans
    Reaches to me

    Your love O Lord
    Reaches to the heavens
    Your faithfulness
    Reaches to the skies

And this is the other one. Grace Upon Grace by Michael Morrow (Emu Music)

What would it take to be our Saviour?
What would it take to give us life?
Who in this world can know the Father?
Who in the darkness is a light?

    Chorus
    Jesus, the Lamb of God
    Messiah, the Holy One
And from his fullness we’ve received
Grace upon grace, grace upon grace
    Jesus, the truth, the life
Who reigns at the Father’s side
And all he has he gave for us
Grace upon grace, grace upon grace

Who was with God before the ages?
Who was alive when time began?
Who would give up the wealth of heaven
Only to suffer at our hands?

Who will return to save his people?
What is the name we’ll shout and sing?
Who is the Word of God to save us?
    What is his name?
